I Hadahaa Feeling

The next morning we woke up somewhat optimistic and went to the restaurant to enjoy our three course breakfast and decided to rent snorkeling equipment. We had just made it to the safety of our villa, when it began to pour rain. A hotel staff member knocked on the door just after we had returned, and we were told that we had 30 minutes to pack and get ready to leave on a cargo boat. We came to realize that we were being evacuated from the island due to a category 5 tropical cyclone.

We were given raincoats, given seasickness wristbands, a dollop of fresh ginger, and seasickness pills, and were rushed off onto the boat along with other guests and the performers from the night before. Once onboard, we realized the boat was also used to haul garbage from the resort to the bigger island. What ensued was a treacherous ride that was enhanced by the pungent smell of garbage and exhaust fumes. Fortunately, the captain thought the conditions were too rough for the 4-hour journey and aborted the ride within 15 minutes. I came very close to losing my three-course breakfast.

We were returned to Villa 48 in driving winds and rain. The villa was flooded, as the glass doors had leaked, and felt unsafe so we asked to be moved to a land villa. A couple of hours later we were transferred to a land villa and were told that the room and all meals would be complimentary while we were stranded; a bottle of Piper champagne awaited us in the room. We went to look at the beach, on this, much calmer side of the island. We planned to go snorkeling, but were all so exhausted that we decided to take naps. I still had to make flight arrangements, as we would now miss our original flights. What made it more challenging was that we were using miles for these flights so were at the mercy of airlines award inventory.

I had a premonition that something like this might happen, since prior to this trip I had gone to Boston on a business trip and the weather had been extremely nice. “Surely I will be paying for this, since the weather in Boston is never this nice in November,” I had thought to myself. I had just hoped it wouldn’t be on this trip.

I managed to secure return flights but could only find flights on United Airlines, which meant that a less than standard United First Class cabin would now replace the dream trip on ANA.

That evening we were informed that the following morning’s itinerary would be as follows:

6:30 Wake up call

7:00 Breakfast

7:30 Evacuate the island on a bigger 36m fishing boat

We finally made it back to Kaadedhdhoo after a two-hour boat ride complete with another Bodu Beru rain dance by the performers from the other night. At the airport, I ordered a Nasi Goreng from the Tasty Plus Café that was probably the best meal I had in the Maldives. Let’s just say that the food at the resort was a bit underwhelming. After a 2-hour wait and an hour flight we were back in Male with 12 hours to kill until our flight back to Singapore. We were all so exhausted from our ordeal that we opted to wait it out at an airport hotel lobby.

Our flight took off at 11:30pm and we were very happy to arrive in Singapore the next morning. Because we arrived a day later, we missed Kumar’s performance but we managed to enjoy ourselves and eat plenty of delicious food until the next day when we boarded our flights back to the US.

In retrospect, we all agreed that next time we would just go to Hawaii, as it is just as beautiful and only a 5-hour flight away.

Heaven and Hell

It takes most people a lifetime to reach paradise but it took me three days. We stopped in Tokyo for a couple of delicious days on the way and ended up in Male 72 hours after our departure. A Hyatt agent greeted us at the Male airport, and informed us that our transfer to the Park Hyatt Hadahaa had been postponed until morning, as the seas were too rough to make the journey at night. Bummer, I was really looking forward to waking up in my private villa in the morning. That should have been our warning.

Accommodations were provided for us at the Trader’s Hotel in Male for that evening and we were assured that it was a five star hotel, but it seemed more like a three star hotel to us. Nevertheless, we all had a good night’s sleep. The next morning, another Hyatt person met us at the airport and revealed our itinerary that would eventually get us to the Park Hyatt; a one-hour flight from Male to Kaadedhdhoo, followed by another hour speedboat ride that would take us to Hadahaa.

The journey was very smooth and we were warmly greeted at the Park Hyatt Hadahaa dock by an army of staff bearing oshibori and golf carts to transport us to our villas. I remembered that our guide had tagged our bags to be delivered to Villa 48 and didn’t think much of it until we passed villa number 37 and kept driving onto the boardwalk that led to the water villas. We were dropped off at the third to last water villa, number 48. I asked Mr. M and Ms. W to pinch me because I couldn’t believe our good fortune. Inside the villa, a bottle of Moet champagne, three coconuts, and various fruits and snacks awaited us. The sun was shining and the sea was clear, I was in heaven.

The next day I awoke to ominous skies but assumed that the clouds would clear for a couple of hours like the previous day and that we would take advantage of that to get some much needed color. I went for a morning run around the island and logged-in exactly 1 mile from our front door and back. My iPod insisted on shuffling songs from my French music collection, leading me to believe that the name of these islands is decidedly pronounced MALL-deevz. As predicted, the clouds cleared and we decided to sunbath on a rather windy beach after breakfast. None of us used sunscreen, as we did not think the sun would be out very long. An hour later, all three of us were sunburned to a crisp.

That evening we were invited to the Dhoni for Bodu Beru, a traditional Maldavian ceremony. I am convinced that it was a rain dance, because that evening it poured rain and the waves were so strong that they shook our water villa throughout the night. None of us had a very restful sleep. Hell bound?

A Million Points Away

The first trip I started planning with my million points was one I had been dreaming about for 20 years, The Maldives. Of course, this dream trip would include travel in First Class Suites on Singapore airlines. I had drunk booked a three night stay at the New Park Hyatt Hadahaa in the Maldives for Thanksgiving using Mr. M’s Hyatt points, not realizing that it was non-refundable. So accommodations were taken care of.

I unsuccessfully searched the Singapore Airline website for a roundtrip ticket in First Class using miles. I ended up calling them and was told that someone would be calling me back from Singapore to make the arrangement. How fancy, I thought. Several missed calls later; I finally connected with an agent.

Agent: I understand you are trying to use miles to travel to Singapore in a First Class Suite?

Me: Why, yes I am

Agent: That would cost 500,000 miles each way; you might want to consider Business Class

Me: (Speechless!)

I ended up booking an itinerary that included business class seats on All Nippon Airlines, Singapore and United.

The day before departure, I was able to secure two First Class seats on ANA for our return. A very rare occurrence that I would look forward to during the trip.

How to spend a million miles?

So, a couple of months ago I received an email from e-prize fulfillment that seemed a bit suspicious. It congratulated me for having won one million American Express points and then went on to request that I complete an affidavit that would disclose all my personal details including my social security number and my birthday. No one form Nigeria would be involved in the transaction. I vaguely remembered liking the American Express page on Facebook in order to qualify for the contest and just as quickly unliking them when I realized that my entire network would be notified of my alliance. I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with AMEX and it ended very badly. Needless to say, I HATE them. The only reason I have a card is because my employer requires that I use one for travel expenses.

I spent an entire day researching e-prize. I called AMEX and they verified that e-prize was a regular vendor, I checked to make sure that the mailing address in the email matched the one on e-prizes official website. I searched online for other people who had received similar e-mails and was reassured that the communication I had received was legit.

Still skeptical, I marched over to the nearest notary public to complete the affidavit and then off to the local post office to mail it via certified mail. I waited several weeks, often checking my AMEX membership rewards account 20 times a day until one day the points magically appeared in my account summary.

Now what?

EAT, EARN, BURN

It’s been a while since I’ve contributed anything to my Blog. Not for lack of travel but rather because it’s been a challenging year and I have been spending much of my time trying to make sense of it. You could say that I have been on a spiritual journey for the past year. My own Eat, Pray, Love if you will but I never seem to get past the Eat part. My version includes Earning and Burning miles instead of Praying and Loving.

This year’s destinations included some old favorites and one new place. It all started with an invitation to share an apartment in South Beach with a friend during the music festival. Most people I know would kill for an opportunity to mingle with the world’s top DJs but I was too busy eating Stone Crabs to care about Hex Hector’s private party.

I somehow managed to talk several family members and friends to meet me in Tokyo for my birthday this year. The planning took place before my life went pear shaped but I managed to make the trip and as a result learned a great life lesson. I realized that all the meals I was served in Japan were Omikase which translates to “It’s up to you”, meaning I leave it up to the chef to serve what’s best for me. The lesson for me was that I should treat my life the same way, I have learned to allow the universe to serve what is best for me.

The new place we visited was Kyoto. I did not fall in love with Japan’s original capital. I so love Tokyo’s energy that Kyoto felt like a nice stroll in the park with some Geishas thrown in for good measure. We had a traditional Kaiseki meal at Kikunoi where our own retired Geisha served us in our own private room. The dishes were beautifully presented but the flavors where perhaps too delicate for my foreign palette. Broccoli rabe, a vegetable I don’t associate with Japanese food, somehow managed to make its way into many of the dishes. Of course, no trip to Asia would be complete without a pilgrimage to Long Beach Seafood in Singapore for Black Pepper Crab.

Next came a quick 4-day trip to Mykonos, the shortest amount of time we’ve ever spent on the enchanted island. But we made the most of it and stuffed ourselves full of grilled seafood. Shortly after Greece, I embarked on a trip that I’ve always wanted to take. I spent 2 weeks with good friends on the Eastern Seaboard, 1 week in Provincetown and the other on Fire Island. I think they ran out of lobster the week I was in P-town.

In the Fall, I revisited Montreal where I devoured wonderful French food including “Duck in a Can” at Pied de Cochon. A visit to my new favorite food town, Honolulu, to sample local food including Alan Wong’s delicious inventions followed Montreal. Finally, a quick jaunt to The River Café in London followed L’Entrecote in Paris.

I still haven’t found myself but I certainly have been doing a good job of feeding my soul. Maybe next year will bring me some enlightenment. In the meantime, Bon Appetit!

More Goa

Wake me up before you Goa

It was still dark at 6am when we arrived Dabolim airport in Goa. Another driver met us to shoo away people and drive us to the Park Hyatt Resort.

The resort is located in South Goa near Cansaulim about 45 minute to an hour from all the action in town. The beach in front of the Park Hyatt is white and pristine. It’s dotted with beach shacks serving fresh seafood. We frequented one named Zeebop several times to sample local lobster.

We were upgraded to a lovely suite with a living area and a wrap around balcony facing the ocean. Most days were spent lounging at the resort pool which is famous for being India’s largest. We ate Curry for breakfast, lunch and dinner and didn’t regret it, although we had antacids ready at hand. I had us booked to get Ayurvedic massages based on our body types, fat and skinny. Mine turned out to be a no nonsense wham bam thank you man meat tenderizing massage which was fine by me. Much better than that willy-nilly massage I got at the Four Season’s in Hawaii for 3 times the price. In, fact, I liked it so much that I booked myself a second massage with Veejay on the last day.

We ventured into town on our second to last day to do some shopping. We were surprised at how much Panaji looked like Mexico. Tijuana to be specific. We bought beautiful fabrics at FabIndia and gorgeous fashions at Barefoot. Had a traditional lunch at Mum’s Kitchen in Miramar where we sampled Xce Xce curry with prawns.

Goa had its share of poverty, in fact the sight that will haunt me for a while took place there. On one of my treks into town, I saw an old man standing in the middle of the road, wearing nothing but a shirt. He was so weak and desperate that he couldn’t even beg.

On our last day at the resort, as we mingled with Bollywood royalty and Russian mafia at the pool, the gardeners caught a 5 foot snake. They paraded the writhing reptile in front of us as if to remind us that we were in the middle of Indian wilderness, the Russians weren’t even fazed.

We spent our last night in India at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. Our room faced the local slum.

You’re going to India?

India? Why are you going to India? Said my hairstylist when I told him I was going there for the New Year. I asked myself the same question as many colleagues who had been there before me had warned me of the poverty and filth.

We still had enough miles left over from the United Airlines contest we had won to fly anywhere in the world and Mr. M had accumulated enough Hyatt points for a week at any of their properties. My criteria were to pick a warm destination that we hadn’t been to before and it had to be as far away as possible. So I came up with Goa! I always wanted to go to India and my travel agent cousin assured me that Goa was “India Light.”

We had to transit through Mumbai to get to get there. We arrived after a 7-hour flight from Munich where we had stopped over for a lovely Christmas visit with my family. Nothing could have prepared us for Mumbai. The smell of burning garbage and incense hits you the minute you exit the airport. We were greeted by entire families camping out at the airport in anticipation of visiting relatives. Others were there to make money off visiting foreigners like us. The one person I was happy to see was our driver from the Hyatt Regency who took our luggage cart and shooed away anyone who was grabbing at us.

Once at the hotel, we had 4 hours to nap, shower and change before our transfer to the domestic airport where we would board our Kingfisher flight to Goa. We couldn’t sleep so we watched Bollywood gossip shows and skin lightening commercials on TV.

The domestic airport was void of all the maddening crowds, and check-in was a breeze. Security, on the other hand, was an elaborate procedure. Men were separated from women and everyone got frisked. Our Carry-on luggage had to be scanned, tagged and stamped along with our boarding pass before we were allowed to board.

Our 40-minute flight came with individual screens playing the latest Bollywood hits and a swarm of mosquitoes. I nervously took my seat as I was wearing short-sleeved shirt and had not sprayed myself with bug repellent. Once everyone was on board the purser announced that the flight attendants were going to spray bug killer and that we should all cover our noses and mouths. As soon as we took off, we were fed a delicious Indian breakfast. I was halfway through “Love Aaj Kal” starring Saif Ali Khan when we landed in Goa. I will never know how it ends.

A quiet time in Mykonos

The economic downturn was very evident in Mykonos this summer. The maddening crowds were nowhere to be found, there was no wait time for the island's top restaurants and we were upgraded to the villa at the Geranium Moonlight Hotel even though we had paid for the more affordable Geranium Town Suites. Blame it on the recession and the string of poor reviews Alex has received on Trip Advisor. We finally felt like our loyalty to the Gorgieve Empire was rewarded. I must note that we were banished to the maid's quarters for the last 2 nights but I can't complain because that's what we paid for.

Much seafood was consumed and paired with cheap rosé wine at Kiki's and Kounelas restaurants. Most of our time was spent lingering at the Geranium pool ogling over a certain Serbian male model named Nicky but we did manage to make it to Elia beach twice. The biggest news on the island was that Pierro's, the oldest living Gay bar in the universe had lost its 40-year reign to a new club named Babylon. Many clubs have tried but have failed to overthrow Pierro's but it looks like Babylon, with its contemporary decor, hip crowd and great music, might have succeeded. Only time will tell.

The weather was great for the most part. The meltemi winds subsided for one day and made the heat unbearable. The overwhelming heat caused a power outage on the island at the exact moment that Ed was leaving for the airport. Poor Ed had to jump over the electronic fence in order to catch his cab to the airport. As a result, he twisted his ankle and broke a heel.

Our flight back was on Lufthansa. Having flown Lufthansa in First class in the past, I was expecting this flight to be just as memorable as my previous ones. I'm sad to say that it was less than satisfying. The cabin looked dated and the service was unorganized and spotty. The only highlight was the caviar service. As it turns out, we were asked to fill out a survey about our experience. Let's just say I'm glad I didn't actually pay for this flight.

A Swiss affair

This was our 14th visit to the Island of Mykonos. Things have changed quite a bit since our first stay, there's a Starbucks now, but the island manages to keep its charm. On this journey, we decided to try out Swiss airline's newly remodeled A330-300. We cashed in our United Airlines winnings from the Elite Choice contest and booked ourselves in First class. It had been a while since we had enough miles to fly in First so I was very excited about this trip. Swiss did not disappoint, in fact, I found the new cabin and service comparable to Singapore airlines. They don't serve caviar in First but everything else made up for it. We got a Bally dobb kit with La Prairie products in it, slippers and pajamas. The service was spot on and the food was plentiful. Most impressive was the new modern cabin.

We landed in Zurich with a few hours to freshen up in the First-class lounge before our flight to Rome, our stopover before Mykonos. We both took showers and Mr. M chose to take a nap in the dayroom while I feasted on nibbly bits.

The flight to Rome was short and uneventful; in fact we slept through most of it. In Rome we picked up our rental car, an upgrade to a BMW hatchback, and headed toward the Waldorf Rome Cavalieri. This is one of my favorite hotels in the world but I liked it much better when it was a Hilton. The rebranding has almost doubled the number of points required for a free night at this palace and has diminished the elite benefits. Nonetheless, we were upgraded to a lovely suite but had to pay a surcharge to have access to our beloved imperial lounge.

Our favorite restaurant, Myosotis, has gone out of business so we had dinner at Pierluigi's in Campo dei Fiori. The place is a total tourist trap and the meal was probably one of the worst I've had in Rome. I should have listened to my friend Shanone and gone to a restaurant in the Trastevere. Lezione appresa.

The next morning, we sunbathed at the lovely pool until noon and then headed off to the Prada outlet in Tuscany. The outlet was a dud but we managed to make a few forced purchases. I really enjoy the road trip and the stops at the many Autogrills on the way but have really been disappointed with the offerings at the outlet the past few times. I think this might be our last pilgrimage for a while.

Tokyoland

The flight to Tokyo on United had the old business class seats and reminded me of how much I like the new seats. We arrived Tokyo an hour early and hopped on the Limo bus destined for the Park Hyatt, one of my favorite hotels in the world. Fortunately, we had enough Hyatt points to secure a second night at the hotel now that we were spending 2 nights in Tokyo.

We were very happy to have a second day in Tokyo, as we couldn't fit everything we wanted to do in one. I was especially happy about this stay at the Park Hyatt because with Mr. M's Diamond status we would have access to the very exclusive spa. I hit the spa as soon as we checked in. The place was not very crowded so I felt like I had it all to myself. 2 minutes in the sauna and 3 minutes in the Whirlpool was all I could handle. On my way out I noticed several Japanese businessmen in the locker room. One was rigorously blow-drying his entire body.

Our first dinner was in Ebisu. We met our good friend Marcus at Shunju Yurari, a modern Washoku restaurant that marries European and Asian influences with Japanese fundamentals. The dishes were very minimalist and artfully presented. Needless to say, we left the place hungry.

The next morning, we headed off to Tsujiki fish market for a sushi breakfast and then a full day of shopping at Muji and Uniqlo in Ginza. A throng of morning rush hour commuters greeted us.

Back in Shinjuku, I was able to locate the Ramen place I had been memorizing directions to on Google street maps. The place is called Sakura Fubuki and the ramen was Yummy.

That night we had reservation at Tempura Kondo, a one Michelin starred restaurant specializing in fried deliciousness. The food was great but we walked out of there smelling like we'd been deep fried in batter ourselves.

The next morning we had enough time for a Japanese breakfast in the hotel, a quick visit to Tokyu hands department store and the food court at Takashimaya. We broke down and went back for some more ramen goodness and then caught the Limo bus back to Narita for our flight to LA.

No night in Bangkok

Once again, we embarked on an Eastward journey to take advantage of the United Double Elite Qualifying Miles Bonus. I was dying to go and was glad that we didn't have to wait until Fall. We also upgraded to Business Class so that we could experience United's new fully-flat seats. The itinerary included 2 nights in Singapore, 2 nights in Bangkok and 1 night in Tokyo.

After booking the flights I found out about Kumar, a famous drag performer in Singapore where homosexuality is banned. Much to my dismay, he wasn't performing any of the nights that we had planned to be in Singapore. "Oh well, maybe next time" I thought to myself.

The United seats were great and I couldn't keep myself from falling asleep, even with the large video screen and all the on-demand videos. I managed stay awake long enough to watch "Revolutionary Road" which was enough movie to last me for the rest of the trip.

We landed in Singapore at 1AM and taxied our way to the Grand Hyatt. As requested, we were greeted with a basket full of mangosteen in our suite. What a treat that was, they taste even better after a 17 hour flight! Once in Singapore, it dawned on me that we could postpone our flight to Bangkok by one day in order to see Kumar perform. I also liked the idea of being able to say that we spent “one night in Bangkok.” I called United and made the change for free as we used miles for that flight.

After a catnap, we were informed that our favorite lounge was closed for renovations and that breakfast would be served at Straits Kitchen. We love Straits Kitchen and dine there at least once when we're in Singapore because it features all of Singapore's cuisines in one place and is conveniently located in the hotel. But breakfast? It turned out to be a blessing in disguise since the offering was much more extensive than what the lounge had offered. At Straits, we had our choice of Indian, Chinese, Malay and Western grub and it turned out that the lounge was open for drinks and canapés in the evenings so it was a win-win.

For lunch, we headed to Long Beach Seafood for our yearly black pepper crab fest, which didn't disappoint. We returned to the hotel and crashed for 12 hours. We woke to find out that trouble was brewing in Bangkok. Had we not changed our flight we would have found ourselves in the middle of it. United informed us that there would be a $250 change fee per passenger to avoid flying into Bangkok since the airport was still open. We decided to wait until the last absolute moment hoping that United would issue a travel waiver as the situation in Bangkok worsened.

On the second day, we couldn't resist another black pepper crab lunch after which we did some shopping on Orchard Street. Then another long nap, dinner at Straits kitchen, another nap. Meanwhile, the situation in Bangkok was taking a turn for the worse. The current Prime Minister had declared a state of emergency and canceled the Thai New Year festivities. The deposed Prime Minister called for a revolution. Then we found out the malls we were planning to visit had been closed because of the riots! That sealed the deal. We called United and coughed up the change fee.

Now it was time for Kumar. Where do I start? Kumar's show at the Hard Rock Cafe starts at 11:30 sharp. Three drag queens race onto the stage. One very convincing, one less, and the third even less. They lip-synced and danced to a Pussy Cat Dolls medley and were joined by two cute dancer boys, one Indian and the other Malay. Kumar makes her entrance after the intro and then chases them away. She kicks off her pumps and starts her monologue. Singapore is a nation of many nationalities and Kumar spared none of them.

Kumar tackles sexuality, as it is a taboo subject in conservative Singapore. Halfway through the show, she dragged two birthday victims up on the stage, one a Malay Islamic boy celebrating his 21^st birthday and the other a female Singapore Airlines flight attendant. She made the boy drink a long island ice tea and talked the flight attendant into doing a lap dance for him. Kumar then singled me out of the crowd and asked me where I was from. When I told her Los Angeles, she pulled Mr. M and I up on the stage. She asked me what I was doing in Singapore and I replied that I had come to see her. It proved to be a good strategy because she was so flattered that she went easy on us.

His family members were the butt end of his jokes. A memorable one, which I will have to write down so I don’t forget it, went something like this:

My aunt and uncle have been hit hard by the recession so my uncle decided to pimp my aunt out assuring her that he will be her PR manager. After agreeing on a $100 rate for her services, they drive into town and he drops her off on the corner and parks across the street. An Australian man in a car stops and propositions to the aunt.

Australian: How much?

Aunt: $100

Australian: I only have $30

Aunt: Let me check with my PR manager

Aunt runs over to uncle's car and asks what she can do for $30. Uncle says a hand job. Aunt runs back to Aussie's car and he agrees to getting a hand job for $30 then pulls out his rather large penis. Aunt tells the Australian to wait a second and runs back to uncle's car and asks if he can loan the man $70.

The show ended at 2:45 AM which left us with only a few hours to pack, shower and get to the airport for our flight to Tokyo but not before hitting the Singapore airlines lounge for Dim Sum.

Safari 101

We flew to Port Elizabeth where we were picked up and driven to Shamwari Private Game Reserve. There we were shown our room and told that we would be paired with a ranger and a group of people for our entire stay.

Meals were included so our expectations were low. Our first lunch was inedible so we decided to just order simple food from then on.

Safari Day 1:

We met our new British family and our ranger JJ at 5 pm and set off for our first game drive. We saw Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos, Zebras, Kudus, Warthogs, heard lots of mummy this and mummy that. Got back to the lodge with enough time to change and meet mummy and daddy for dinner.

Lucky for us, dinner was a traditional Braai (South African BBQ) so it was a simple affair with grilled meats. Except that the grilled meats came from some of the animals that we saw on our drive! We sampled Kudu, Warthog and Antelope. Kudu won hands down!

Safari Day 2:

Up at the crack of dawn for a 5 am drive. Now this time, we got to see a pride of Lionesses with their cubs. A Cheetah get chased down the valley by a Lion because he tried to steal the Lion's half eaten prey. We greeted Giraffes and revisited some of the old chaps we had previously seen. All in all this was the best drive we had.

That afternoon, we were separated from our British family and paired with 2 new couples, one South African and the other Irish. That evening's drive was a dud and dinner was formal but fortunately Kudu was on the menu!

Safari Day 3:

On our last drive, we got to see our Lion once again. This time, he was extremely frustrated because his mate was ignoring his calls. At one point, he just got up and sprayed the tree he was lying next to and walked away.

It was now time to pack up and head back to the airport. We were scheduled to connect in Cape Town to a Lufthansa flight heading to Frankfurt. From Frankfurt, we would connect to an Air Berlin flight to Berlin where we would spend New Year's Eve with friends.

Once again, we checked our bags all the way and were convinced that we would never see them again. Our fear was confirmed by the agent who checked us in at Port Elizabeth. She tried to discourage us from sending our luggage all the way through as we were traveling on 3 different airlines and through 3 different airports. We ignored her plea and decided to take our chances and got our flight to Cape Town.

In Cape Town, we boarded our Lufthansa flight, were greeted by our prison matrons and settled into our business class torture chambers. We were given stale bread and water and told that we would be beaten if we refused it. I am slightly exaggerating. We were thrilled to arrive in Frankfurt and connect to our flight to Berlin. Much to our surprise, we were once again reunited with our bags in Berlin!

Cape Town Day 1:

We arrived Cape Town exhausted after 24+ hours of flying and checked into the Westin where we ordered room service and crashed.

Woke up in time for an amazing Indian dinner at Bukhara and then went back to the hotel where we crashed again.

Cape Town Day 2:

Woke up at 3 am. Had oysters and champagne at the lounge for breakfast and worked up the courage to request an upgrade to a Jr. suite. We were told that one might become available later in the day so we decided to go check out the waterfront while we waited. Fell in love with colored ostrich eggs and bought a whole bunch to take home. On a side note, not one security person at 5 different airports asked us about the eggs in our carry-ons except, you guessed it, TSA @ JFK. We got a "Wachu got in your bag? Snow globes or somethin" and then she proceeded to unwrap and inspect them and say "Are they really THIS big?" um, no! I could hear Mr. M muter "Be careful, they're fragile" under his breath.

Got back to the hotel and our wish was granted. A corner suite with a view of Table Mountain and the harbor.

Lunch was had at The Royale Eatery, losely based on Pulp Fiction, where we had yummy Ostrich burgers. I love it when the hotel concierge has to Google my restaurant picks :-)

Cape Town Day 3:

OK, so today we were determined to do some sightseeing and decided to go to the top of Table Mountain. Big mistake, the line for the cable car was at least 2 hours so we made our cab driver take us on a tour of the cape instead.

Dinner was at Bo Kap Kombuis, an authentic Cape Malay restaurant in the Bo Kaap district. Yusuf and his wife Nazli, the owners, were extremely gracious and could not believe that we had come all the way from Hollywood to eat at their restaurant. Nazli's homemade chili sauce was so delicious that I made her give me a container to take home with me.

OK, so our joke was that Cape Town looks just like Southern California and we couldn't believe that we came this far when we could've just stayed home! It's like Orange County 10 years ago :-p

Call of the wild

This was not only our much anticipated trip to South Africa, but an opportunity to compare the C cabin on 4 different Star Alliance carriers and test out Mr. M's new top tier status with Hyatt and Starwood. More importantly, this trip was in memory of my late father who longed to revisit his beloved South Africa. The itinerary was all over the place so we set ourselves up for a few bumps in the road. It went something like this:

LAX>LHR>JNB>CPT>PLZ>CPT>FRA>TXL>CDG>MUC>FRA>JFK>LAX

LAX>LHR:

We got to LAX 40 minutes before the flight and I was stressing. Fortunately, a United angel escorted us to the plane and promised that our bags would make it on the plane. We weren't as optimistic. United cabin was ratty, FAs were cranky, meals were mediocre and IFE was substandard...and yes this was Business class.

We arrived London with six hours to spare so we dashed to the Arrivals lounge, took quick showers and changed into new underwear. Knowing that the only places that would be open on Christmas Eve would be the shops in Knightsbridge, we hopped on the Piccadilly line and headed into town. Harvey Nichs was open so we went straight up to the 5th floor and had ourselves some Yo! sushi, looked at overpriced yet beautifully packaged products and got right back on the tube to Heathrow.

The new Star Alliance lounge at Heathrow is a step up from the old Red Carpet Club but I really miss lounge hopping in the old terminal. We nibbled on curry bits and headed toward our gate.

The seats on South African Airways were spacious and they actually lie flat! We knew we would get a good night sleep on the way to Johannesburg. The food was beautifully presented but tasted like airplane food and the service was friendly but nothing special considering that we were one of 4 couples in the cabin. We watched "Baby Mamma" and slept like babies all the way to South Africa.

In Jo'burg, we barely had time to make our connection to our flight to Cape Town. We thought for sure our bags would not make it on the flight. They arrived in Cape Town a bit tattered but still in one piece just like us!

More Mykonos

A very windy week in Mykonos staying at the Geranium Town Suites. The highlight of the trip was KiKi's Taverna at Agios Sostis Beach. Delicious salads and freshly grilled Calamari/Shrimp. We ate there 3 times! On our third to last day, i decided to check and see what was going on with our return flight. Lo and behold, our flight was canceled due to the strike! I scrambled to find alternative flights when internet service on the entire island went down due to heavy winds. It was time to pull out old reliable.....the iphone! I have learned that the Greeks will bend over backwards NOT to help you so I had no choice but to call the US reservation desk. Several hundred dollars later, I had us booked on Air New Zealand to LAX via London. Me in Business class and Vince in Coach with no hopes of getting upgraded. Finally on our last day, internet service was back up and I found him a Lufthansa flight via Newark which we later confirmed him on at Athens airport.

We flew back to Athens on Aegean airlines and overnighted at the beautiful Athens Hilton. Our room had an unobstructed view of the Acropolis. We dined at the rooftop restaurant which was lovely and where the food was lackluster at best. Vince and I left Ed in the room at 4 am as we taxied our way back to the Athens airport for our 6 am flight to Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, Vince's upgrade cleared (sigh!) and I proceeded onto my flight to London. Vince spent the night in NYC with his friends and I got to experience Business class on Air New Zealand. What a treat! After experiencing the Star Alliance lounge at Heathrow's terminal 1 , sampling nibbly bits and showering, we boarded the flight to LAX. The seats are angled, so they are truly lie flat seats! I ate everything they put in front of me and sampled several wines from their extensive New Zealand wine list which included more than a dozen wines. I watched "Lars and the Real Girl" and "Caramel" on my very large personal screen and took many cat naps in between. An hour before landing, they served us finger sandwiches and a scone with real clotted cream and jam!

Vince flew back to LA on UA from Newark the next day. I can't wait to experience Air New Zealand again...oh I forgot to mention that I got miles for the Air New Zealand flight even though I used miles!

Trade Winds - The Route to Mykonos

So we took a gamble and booked Mr. M on a $1,700 Lufthansa economy flight from LAX to FRA and then used miles to get to CDG and return from ATH. The plan was to use SWUs to upgrade him to C on the same flights I had confirmed in BZ using his miles :-D. Well, it payed off, sort of. He cleared the flight from LAX to FRA on the same day (sigh of relief) but Lufthansa went on strike the day we arrived in Paris. No time for lounging in FRA due to tight connection.

Checked into the Park Hyatt Vendome (upgraded to superior room with two beds) had to sneak in Ed like a hooker. In the room, waiting for us, were two macaroons, pistachio and strawberry, and a box of chocolates....yum! Room smelled delicious too. Took a shower with "Blaise Mautin" products and hit the street, first to go visit auntie and then to L'entrecote for dinner. At Aunties we noshed on Pierre Herme pastries that my cousin Azar had brought with her. There was NO wait to get into L'entrecote and it was as delicious as ever, though the portions seemed smaller and the meat a bit tougher. 2 bottles of wine and a couple of desserts later the bill arrived.......$65 per person! after that, it was time to run to the Pharmacie Anglaise on the Champs Elysees for Vince to buy his Keracnyl products and the Virgin Megastore for me to buy obscure French musique. I didn't last long as the glamourous bathroom at the Park Hyatt beckoned. That evening was a blur as we drank ourselves into a tizzy and went to my favorite boite, L'insolite...continued to drink and ended up at the Depot, aka the bowels of Paris.

Next day, 2 pm EasyJet flight from Orly to Pisa. EasyJet line was at least 50 people deep! Fortunately Ed had paid for "early boarding" which also qualified him to cut the line....so we tagged along! All went smoothly except for Ed spilling his entire bottle of "Blood Orange Fanta" on my pants. We arrived to Pisa and sent Vince to fetch the car while we waited for the luggage as time was of essence. We only had 3 hours to get to the Prada outlet. 20 minutes later Mr. Milan pulled up in a Fiat hatchback. Off we were to Prada Paradise. After some congestion, we finally reached our destination with 1 hour to shop. I found 2 pair of pants and Vince 2 bathing suits plus a leather bag. Mission accomplished! Now it was time to get some nourishment at the "AutoGrill" as we were starving. By the time we reached the "Autogrill" we were so hungry that we grabbed everything we could get our hands on at the buffet. I had plate with half penne bolognese and half twisty pasta with pesto. Vince got the pasta with pesto and a bowl of salad in which he hid 2 balls of mozzarella that he didn't get charged for. Ed got a seafood risotto, some proscuitto, and something else. We drank a chianti and a lambrusco. Once full, we followed the Autostrada 1 all the way to the Rome Cavalieri Hilton. We reached the hotel at 11 pm. Ed ordered a pizza from room service and we all devoured it!

Next day, Air One flight from Rome to Athens at 10 am. No time to use the lovely pool at the Cavalieri :-(. We returned the rental car at FCO and boarded our flight to Athens. In Athens, we met my brother Amir for lunch at the airport while we waited for our connecting flight to Mykonos on Aegean airlines.

So I finally decided to start my Blog and nothing seems more fitting than a Singapore run to start it. This trip was planned as a result of United Airline's Double Elite Qualifying Miles promotion. I figured I could requalify for Premier Executive on United with this one flight to Singapore since I already had 15,000 miles under my belt. I'm also aiming at making Mr. M 1K on United again so that I can mooch off of his benefits :-D. No SIN run would be complete without Ms. W, so we dragged her along too! My other project this year is to make Mr. M a Diamond member with Hyatt so we stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Singapore and the Park Hyatt in Tokyo. Since we're trying to complete 25 stays at Hyatt we chose to use our points to upgrade to suites which was a great choice. This trip took place during Memorial Day weekend and included 2 nights in Singapore and 1 night in Tokyo on the way back. We upgraded to Business Class using System Wide Upgrades from Mr. Ms account.
